St Anthony's Feastday 2019

History
More than 60 years ago, a small Catholic Village was ministered by a small chapel called the “Chapel of Saint Anthony”. As the Catholic population grew over time, a church was soon needed to minister to this growing population. On 18th December 1960, the Church of St. Anthony was blessed and officially opened by Archbishop Monsignor M. Olcomendy. In 1986, the people staying in Mandai and the Church of St. Anthony received a Notice of Resettlement. Through the Lord’s generous providence, 25 Woodlands Avenue 1 was successfully tendered in 1989. Fr. John Khoo oversaw the construction of the new church, and the new Church of St. Anthony was blessed and opened on 23rd April 1994 by Archbishop Gregory Yong.

The parish, which has grown to 4,500 parishioners since its humble beginnings from the small Catholic Village, celebrates in 2019 the silver jubilee of the move from Mandai to Woodlands. In 2020, the Church of St. Anthony will be celebrating the diamond jubilee since her first blessing and opening in 1960.

Logo Defined
The 2019 Feast Day planning team gathered to plan the 2019 Feast Day celebration, which would commemorate the 25th year of Church of St. Anthony’s move from Mandai to Woodlands. Under the direction of our parish priest Father Ignatius Yeo, the 2019 Feast Day celebration became the event to mark the start of a 1-year bonanza which would end with the 2020 Feast Day celebration. During the 2020 Feast Day celebration, our parish would commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the blessing and opening of the Church of St. Anthony.

To memorialize these two anniversaries, the planning team specially designed a logo to carry through the 1-year celebration.

The circular design reminds us that the head of our community is Jesus Christ, who our patron saint St. Anthony carries in the middle. On the cross in the centre of the logo is the “Brief” (or “Letter”) of St. Anthony, a prayer that our patron saint gave to a woman in Portugal during the 13th century to free her from demonic oppression.

Encircling the Brief along the perimeter are the words ‘A Community of Disciples’, ‘25 years in Woodlands’ and ‘60 years of Blessings’. These words reflect the communitarian nature of our parishioners of the Church of Saint Anthony with Jesus Christ at the centre, and reflect our parish celebrating these anniversaries together as one family and community in Christ.

The words are split into three sections as a reflection of God’s trinitarian nature.

Finally, each pair of years (1994 and 2019; 1960 and 2020) on either side of the logo correspond with the respective commemoration periods.
